Craft-and-design or Craft AND Design? While design enjoys formidable power and presence in contemporary culture, perhaps craft is more typically centre stage in the pages of this magazine. Yet design has its own demands and poses its own questions for it has, of course, a fascinating, diverse and dynamic identity. The design and craft discourses in fact share many points – and where they have differing positions, the interrelationships are rewarding to investigate and exchange.

For this Spring/Summer issue, in which we celebrate Sandra Brownlee (2014 Saidye Bronfman award winner), we also turn our attention more pointedly to questions of design. What is design and how does it fit into the practices of Canadian crafts- people? We also discover that the reverse question – ‘how does craft fit into the practices of Canadian designers?’ – may have a separate and yet intrinsically connected answer. What do you think?

Les métiers d’art et le design sont-ils distincts ou indissociables? Si la puissance et la présence du design sont très fortes dans la culture contemporaine, les métiers d’art occupent habi- tuellement une place prépondérante dans ce magazine. Et pourtant, le design a ses propres exigences et interrogations, compte tenu de son identité fascinante, diversifiée et dynamique. Les propos sur le design et les métiers d’art ont en fait de nombreux points communs – et lorsque les positions divergent, il est enri- chissant de se pencher et d’échanger sur les rapports mutuels.

Pour ce numéro de printemps-été où nous célébrons Sandra Brownlee (lauréate du prix Saidye-Bronfman 2014), nous nous intéressons également de plus près aux questions de design. Qu’est-ce que le design et comment s’intègre-t-il aux pratiques des artisans canadiens? Nous découvrons aussi que la question inverse – « Comment les métiers d’art s’intègrent-ils aux pratiques des designers canadiens? » – peut avoir une réponse à la fois distincte et intrinsèquement reliée. Qu’en pensez-vous?
