Pavitra Wickramasinghe
Montréal, Quebec
A multidisciplinary artist, Wickramasinghe began with video, and came to her current practice through experimentation. Mainly concerned with new ways of conceptualizing the moving image and conventions of seeing, her practice explores the limits of technologies like laser cutting and 3D printing. Pavitra suffuses her work in varied technologies and pushes their threshold when it is impossible to accomplish what she wants by hand: “The technology picks up where the hand stops.”
Guided by wonder, Wickramasinghe’s practice has recently been preoccupied by paper. An everyday democratic material, paper is both supple and strong, and has the potential to be transformed in many different ways.
Wickramasinghe’s objects are cut to highlight the delicate linear forms and patterns that suffuse the patterns of her work. As an educator, she hopes to instil in her students the passion to learn, a fearlessness of technology and an embrace of mistakes.
“Making things is important. It’s a way to feel empowered. We see first-hand the importance of the arts and their contribution to our well-being during a time of crisis. Art cultivates curiosity and perspective, bringing insights about ourselves and the world around us. Creative expression is fundamental to the human experience.”
