Montserrat Duran Muntadas
Montreal, Quebec
Montserrat Duran Muntadas is a conceptual artist working at the intersection of fine craft and women’s historical practices. Her trajectory has led her to mixed-media sculptures and installations, allying glass with other materials. Having studied at the Centro Nacional del Vidrio and the Real Fábrica de Cristales de La Granja (2007) in Spain, and with a Bachelor in Visual Arts from the University of Barcelona (2010), Muntadas’s foray into combining glass and fabric is recent.
Muntadas is clear on the lineage of her work: “As a woman, I see my contribution to the art world as a way of adding my own discourse to the history of women that has been stifled by a patriarchal society.”
Drawn to the fragile yet solid nature of glass, Muntadas incorporates her grandmother’s hand-embroidered work. In her recent project “My beautiful children and other anomalies,” Muntadas investigates themes of motherhood and infertility, exploring physical and psychological anomalies, while reflecting on the female condition and the societal obligation of experiencing motherhood.
Muntadas’ advice to those thinking about experimenting with their craft in new ways: “Stand by their convictions, work long hours in the studio even if they think that it’s not progressing... It’s not true, we never know when the right idea will come, practice does make perfect.”
